  • The Center’s Visiting Scholars & Fellows Program offers opportunities for post-doctoral social scientists pursuing innovative research on Europe to leverage the resources of Harvard and the CES community to advance their scholarship. Visiting Scholars take part in a weekly New Research on Europe Seminar that allows them to present work in progress and receive feedback from colleagues.

Maier co-directs the Weatherhead Center’s Initiative in Global History (WIGH) with Sven Beckert and Sugata Bose.  He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  Currently he is working on an “alternative history” of the era from World War I to the present entitled “The New Spirit of the Laws.”

CES has a longstanding commitment to supporting students through grants for research, travel and internships. CES oversees the Secondary Field in European History, Politics, and Societies (EHPS) which allows Harvard undergraduates to obtain a guided and recognized interdisciplinary course of study focused on Europe. The Center supports workshops and funding for Ph.D. dissertation research, and our faculty take an active role in mentoring doctoral students

Her most recent book, Divided Rule: Sovereignty and Empire in French Tunisia, 1881-1938, was released by the University of California Press in 2013. Lewis’ book, The Boundaries of the Republic: Migrant Rights and the Limits of Universalism in France, 1918-1940, was a co-winner of the 2008 James Willard Hurst Prize awarded by the Law and Society Association for the best book in socio-legal history.
