Visiting Scholars Program

CES Visiting Scholars 2019-2020 (see profiles)

CES welcomes Visiting Scholars from the United States, Europe, and other parts of the globe. They are chosen from a diverse pool of applications from post-doctoral social scientists and historians who are working on modern Europe.

"CES is not only a vibrant and friendly forum of top-notch scholars from around the world, who are advancing the study of Europe - it is "un esprit", a shared feeling of being at the right place, at the right time. Most of all, it has allowed me to raise the quality of my own research, while also markedly accelerating it!"

Stella Ghervas, CES Visiting Scholar 2013-2015

CES Visiting Scholars are chosen from a pool of applications from post-doctoral social scientists and historians who are working on modern Europe. They continue their research on the Harvard campus while engaging with CES faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and participating in study groups, seminars, and conferences.

CES Visiting Scholars present their current work in the New Research on Europe Seminar, chaired by CES Local Affiliate Arthur Goldhammer, an open to the public forum.

CES Visiting Scholars are admitted on a competitive basis for a period of at least three months (two of which must be during the academic year, i.e. September and October in the fall or March and April in the spring) and up to one year in residence at CES.

Except for the John F. Kennedy Fellows, CES does not provide funding for Visiting Scholars; they are expected to have their own source of funding such as sabbatical

salary, personal funds, grants from their home governments, or other private organizations.

Information about funding recommendations for potential funding sources that are not affiliated with CES, can be found at the Prospective Applicants tab in the Visiting Scholars Program page along with information about benefits, requirements, and the application.
