Summer Internships

CES Summer Internship Recipients - Summer 2017

Over the years CES’s rich program of internships in some of the highest European public service offices, private enterprises, and research institutions has offered invaluable professional and cultural experience to numerous Harvard College students. These opportunities have enabled students to expand horizons while learning and honing new skills in an international environment, spurred academic inquiry on European issues, and built a lifelong appreciation for European cultures.

CES offers Harvard undergraduates two options for summer internships in Europe where students can choose to either:

  • Tailor an internship to their interests and apply for CES funding.
  • Apply for one of the pre-negotiated CES positions.

How to apply

Students interested in applying for European internships over the summer should submit the following documents via CARAT:

  • Cover letter (one page)
  • Current CV/resume
  • Unofficial transcript
  • One letter of recommendation
  • Budget (for independently organized internships only)

Student Profiles – Working in Europe

Chardonnae Deslandes (2021)

In 2018, CES gave 18 students the opportunity to work in places as diverse as Albania and the United Kingdom. They shared their experiences of working and living in Europe here.

Information for Internship Recipients

  • CES requires that the undergraduates participating in the internship program attend a Pre-departure Orientation that covers some of the practical aspects of living abroad. Dates and details of these events will be emailed directly to the selected candidates.
  • For general travel and safety information, please consult Harvard Global Support Services. Please be aware that different countries may require various documentation which you will need to supply. In particular, obtaining a TIER 5 Government Authorized Exchange Visa for the UK is a lengthy process, which includes a service fee (~$800), and we advise that you initiate it as soon as you secure an internship. For all matters concerning the UK visa process we recommend contacting BUNAC.

"We need to move away from thinking in terms of specialization in a single country. We learn lessons from people everywhere that are valid, insightful and deep. I am blessed to have had the serendipity of being here, in the Balkans, and the eyes to see what makes it beautiful."
